The Inspiring Story of Likko, Master Wood Carver from Bali

Meet I Wayan Suwena aka Likko a 48-year-old artist from the beautiful Mas Village in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Likko’s family has been carving wood for generations, and he learned the craft from his father when he was just 7 years old. He fell in love with carving right away and has been doing it for 41 years! Wayan can carve in both traditional Balinese and modern styles, drawing inspiration from Balinese stories and legends.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Wayan was busy showcasing his work at exhibitions in Malaysia and even carved giant liberty wood statue for the embassy building in Jakarta. However, when the pandemic hit, he lost many of his customers and had to find other ways to make money. He now does manual labor and works as a driver to support his family.

Despite these challenges, Wayan is determined to share his love for wood carving with young people. He wants to teach them about this traditional art form and keep it alive for future generations. With every piece he creates, Wayan not only tells a story but also leaves a lasting legacy for others to enjoy.

About Artisana
Artisana provides showroom and marketplace services for the artisans of Indonesia, and in particular Bali. Our mission is to foster and promote the traditional activities of local artisans to help preserve the skills they learned as children. These skills are dying in our wider community. You cannot find these skills in most western countries and in countries such as Indonesia where these skills of working with wood, stone and other natural materials still exist today, they are also under pressure.
